Folk music students made study visit to Szeged

18 May 2026

The bagpipe students of the Liszt Academy took part in a masterclass and launched a research project at the Móra Ferenc Museum.

During the visit led by department head Dr. Mátyás Bolya to the instrument collection, the students took part on a masterclass by Balázs "Dongó" Szokolay as well as examined old instruments and their parts with the museum's curators. Drawing on their knowledge of folk music, the students helped to identify matching pieces, reconstruct the instruments' original condition and play several historical instruments. This work was supported by professional artefact photography and scholarly publications.

Thanks to the successful workshop, the students were granted research access to the museum’s collection, ensuring that the collaboration will continue in the future. This kind of expertise exchange is crucial, as museum artefacts represent the primary link to the traditional history of musical instruments for today's generations.
