The prize winners of the 12th Liszt–Bartók International Piano Competition in 2025 will take the stage at the matinée concert. The common thread running through the programme presented by Boris Uzunov and Bozhidar Lazarov is that they have selected works by composers who were themselves active as pianists. In the first half of the concert, alongside Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata and the two-movement Sonata in F-sharp major by the Russian composer Scriabin, who was active at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Bartók’s cycle Out of Doors will be performed. Composed in 1926, the suite follows the tradition of programme music, with evocative movement titles such as The Night’s Music and The Chase. The second half of the programme showcases both the virtuosic and lyrical sides of the emblematic Romantic pianist-composers Chopin and Liszt, through a pairing of an etude and a ballade from each.
