Frida and Diego, Clara and Robert, Izabella and Dénes – inspiring romances and extraordinary legacies. To open the 2026 Kamara.hu Festival, the legendary partnership of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera finds its musical mirror in the works of the Schumanns, performed by the festival’s own husband-and-wife artistic directors.
Fascinating cultural intersections and a shared passion for music await those attending this year’s flagship concert in the Grand Hall. At the heart of this orchestral programme lies the art of dialogue, be it between individual voices or the composer and performer.
The evening opens with a unique hybrid of concert aria and piano concerto; in Mozart’s hands, the piano, which always seems to “sing”, finds a literal duet partner in the human voice. Just as Mozart was inspired by a specific soprano, Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 – famously lost for nearly two centuries – was written for a particular virtuoso of his day. The piece acts as a bridge between the tradition of the Baroque concerto grosso and the emergence of the Classical concerto.
After the interval, the poignant atmosphere of Frida Kahlo’s world returns to the fore. In Karl Amadeus Hartmann’s Concerto funebre, the violin offers a heart-wrenching lament in stark contrast to the orchestra. The festival draws to a close with Mozart’s double concerto – a testament to the brilliance of the Mozart siblings – featuring the festival’s artistic directors as soloists.
The artistic directors dedicate this year’s festival to the memory of Imre Földes, the beloved and highly respected professor of the Liszt Academy, who passed away recently.
