In the christmas season of 1734 an inestimable present awaited the parishes of St. Thomas and St. Nicholas churches in Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach’s grandiose Christmas Oratorio was presented on the major feast days and Sundays of the Christmas period. The six cantatas of this magnificent cycle form a complementary whole, concerning all important elements of the Nativity Story from the manger of Betlehem through the circumcision of Jesus to the adoration of the Magi, i. e. from Christmas Day to Epiphany. The most lustrously orchestrated four of the six cantatas will be performed by the nationally and internationally prestigious Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir – featuring aknowledged soloists, conducted by György Vashegyi on the Second Sunday of Advent.
