Dynamic violist Sheila Browne enjoys a career that includes solo, chamber collaborations and orchestral appearances. She has performed in major venues on six continents, including appearances at Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, and has recorded for the Sony, Nonesuch, Bridge, MSR, and Albany labels. A strong proponent of new music, she will be premiering the second concerto written for her this summer in Israel. She was a member of the internationally prize-winning Arianna String Quartet, and was featured in a Chamber Music magazine cover story while in the Gotham String Quartet. Browne has collaborated/recorded with Audra MacDonald, Gilbert Kalish, Paul Katz, Anton Kuerti, Ruth Laredo, Arnold Steinhardt, Richard Stolzman, Carol Wincenc, the Diaz Trio, and members of the Brentano, Calidore, Guarneri and Vermeer quartets. As principal violist of the New World Symphony, she was selected by Artistic Director Michael Tilson-Thomas to be featured in the PBS documentary “Beethoven Alive!” A passionate teacher, Sheila was a teaching assistant as an undergraduate of famed pedagogue Karen Tuttle at The Juilliard School. She also studied with famed soloist Kim Kashkashian in Germany, and received a Masters of Music at Rice University. She is newly appointed to teach at Tianjin Juilliard School, after Associate Professor positions at University of Delaware and North Carolina School of the Arts, where she taught for a decade.
