MÁV Symphony Orchestra

Daniel Boico, chief conductor of MÁV Symphony Orchestra, has aimed for diversity when putting together this programme. The music of the United States is represented by Samuel Barber (1910–1981), one of the most famous American composers of the 20th century. The School for Scandal is an English comedy dating from 1777, to which Barber wrote incidental music. Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, first performed in 1866 and completed in its present form a year later with the help of Joseph Joachim, will be played by renowned Russian-German violinist Kirill Troussov. The work coming after the intermission is one of the most peculiar pieces in 20th century music. English composer Gustav Holst (1874–1934) wrote The Planets orchestral suite during the First World War, having previously made a thorough study of astronomy and astrology. The seven-movement work depicts the seven planets (not including Earth) of our Solar System as the composer imagined them, giving each planet its own distinctive character. The work requires a grand orchestra and many different instruments, which is why it is rarely heard in concert.
