The training I received at the Academy was difficult and at times harsh, but those who survived the experience emerged as real musicians.

The present-day of contemporary percussion music (Amadinda) and its future (students of the Liszt Academy and Bartók Conservatoire) step on stage together in a programme the last item of which is a piece that attempts to tell the rich and complex history of percussion through the medium of music alone. The first part of the concert is sure to be of particular fascination for many: the near cult composition of the first period of Amadinda, Doll’s House Story, and the Westlake work which became a repertoire piece in international concert life, Omphalo Centric Lecture, drawing inspiration from African music and Minimalism. Aurél Holló represents Amadinda, which also functions as a composer workshop. He had this to say about the work: “instruments, marimbas, bass marimba, special stuff, poppyseed head, small cowbell, other niceties, double bass strings, wooden sticks, a couple of cumbersome sponge-headed beaters, four performers – tools. Imprints of the celestial world on earth?”
