Gergely Kovács Piano Recital

Gergely Kovács Junior Prima Award pianist is one of the most significant performers of his generation. He graduated at Liszt Academy of Music earning a masters and Solisten class degree and is currently pursuing his DLA at the Doctoral School. The 3rd prize winner of the International Franz Liszt Competition has chosen an unusual repertoire for his recital. Ravel wrote his five-movement piece Miroirs in a very difficult period of his life. It is a perfect musical reflection of images. Liszt’s Spanish Rhapsody is based on the inspirations collected during his tour in Spain and Portugal and contains variations for themes of La foglia and Jota Aragonesa. Scriabin wrote his second sonata in his first period, which was inspired by Chopin. It includes two movements and has the title Sonata-Fantasy. Continuing the Russian theme, Kovacs finishes the recital with Rachmaninov’s Sonata No. 2 composed in 1913. Although the premiere of the piece was a huge success, Rachmaninov modified the work 18 years later because he thought it was too superfluous so he simplified it. But if we compare the two versions, the first is more original and emotional. Despite its difficulties, more pianists choose to perform this version than the second one.
