In 1970, four young academy students gave a solo piano recital. The “pianist quartet” – as the press of the time called them – consisted of Zoltán Kocsis, Dezső Ránki, István Lantos and Sándor Falvai. “I originally wanted to be an organist”, István Lantos said at the time. “I only turned to the piano in secondary school because I understood that the piano had much greater potential.” Sándor Falvai arrived at the Liszt Academy from Ózd and then Miskolc. “I had a recording session last year,” said the then 20-year-old pianist. “In May I gave my first solo concert. That was the beginning, the first step. I’m really looking forward to continuing.” And, we might add, what a continuation it was! The two members of the pianistic foursome, István Lantos and Sándor Falvai, have done groundbreaking work not only on stage but also in educating future generations. Both will celebrate their 75th birthdays in 2024.
