Benjámin Forgó & Márton Mikulík Piano Four-Hand Recital Presented by Liszt Academy
Mahler: Symphony No. 1
Mahler: Symphony No. 1 in D major (‘Titan’) [arranged by Bruno Walter with the supplements of the performers]
Benjámin Forgó, Márton Mikulík (piano)
The new series, Sunday Afternoon Classics, will feature well-known or deserving works performed by the young talents of the Liszt Academy. On the first occasion, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 will be performed. The original orchestral work was premiered in the Pesti Vigadó in 1888, the second version was performed in Hamburg in 1893 and in Weimar in 1894, conducted by the composer. The adjective ʻTitan’ was added to the title only in the latter two performances. In 1896, a further version, now in four movements, was played in Berlin. This version proved to be the definitive one and was published two years later. This time, the monumental work by the former conductor of the Hungarian State Opera House will be heard in a four-hand transcription by Bruno Walter. While maintaining the grandiose sound, the transcription emphasises the lyrical and dramatic aspects of the work. Benjámin Forgó and Márton Mikulík are two of the outstanding talents of the Liszt Academy. They have triumphed in numerous competitions as solo pianists, but also perform regularly as chamber musicians.
