Chopin: Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor, Op. 65

Dolfin Balázs (cello), Balog Alexandra (piano)

Junior Prima Award-winning performers Alexandra Balog and Balázs Dolfin experienced the international musician’s life at a very young age. After studying in Budapest, Alexandra Balog continued her education in London and Graz, and she is currently furthering her studies in the United States. Balázs Dolfin’s path led him to Munich, Germany. Their chamber evening at the Liszt Academy is built around three pillars, featuring pieces by Janáček, Stravinsky, and Chopin. The Czech master’s “Fairy Tale” transports us into the world of Russian romanticism, while Stravinsky’s “Italian Suite” (an arrangement of the ballet Pulcinella) evokes the frivolous and vibrant atmosphere of Baroque Naples. Chopin, known almost exclusively as a composer of piano works, has only one chamber sonata, which was the last piece published during his lifetime. This work took several attempts to complete: “as for my cello sonata: sometimes I throw it in the corner, then I take it up again,” the composer remarked about it.
