László Borbély Presented by Liszt Academy

Glenn Gould was one of the best-known and most outstanding pianists of the 20th century. Widely held as an oddball for his eccentricities, he stopped giving concerts at the age of 31, the peak of his career, and decided to devote his life to studio recordings. The majority of his records feature pieces by Bach and Beethoven. He also liked to play works from pre-Baroque times and modern compositions, while it was well known that he did not like most pianist–composers of the Romantic age, another sign of his uniqueness. László Borbély, an outstanding representative of a new generation of Hungarian pianists, pays tribute to this eccentric Canadian genius with a select programme for this evening. The pieces he will play were all part of Glenn Gould’s repertoire, whether he performed them in concert or in the studio.
