Purcell Choir & Orfeo Orchestra Presented by Liszt Academy

Hungarian concert audiences owe the (re)discovery of a whole range of Baroque masters to György Vashegyi and his two ensembles, thus they have already brought this truly worthy work from the oeuvre of Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690–1749) to our attention both in concert format and on a recording. The contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, who the great master respected and even revered, also conducted concerts at the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig and spent the greater part of his career in the service of the court, although he did manage to travel to Italy and he composed 18 or so operas. He had a similarly prolific output in the area of church music, and more specifically in the composition of passions: of these, Orfeo Orchestra and Purcell Choir have selected the work written for Easter 1727, the title of which evokes the image of the good shepherd Jesus from the Gospel of John.
