Richard Taruskin's lecture course in musicology Presented by Liszt Academy

Dr. Richard Taruskin, professor emeritus of the University of California at Berkeley and holder of many prestigious titles including an honorary membership of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, holds a lecture series entitled Cursed Questions at the Doctoral School. After a number of groundbreaking monographs and volumes of essays on Russian music (including the two-volume Stravinsky and the Russian Tradition, 1996), early music, and the unparalleled single-author multi-volume Oxford History of Western Music (2005), a volume of uncollected lectures is now in production under this title. A criterion for inclusion is that the original title should have been a question. These always provocative essays represent a heightened sense of moral responsibility for the role of thinker and historiographer. Problems of writing music history take central place in the essays but the subject matter may be as diverse as Haydn and the Enlightenment, the Cold War as music historical period, the ideology of early music performance, or the questionable aesthetic autonomy of music. The lecture series offers a selection from the book before publication.
