Postgraduate Specialist Training Programme in Chamber Music Performance

The Chamber Music Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music offers postgraduate specialist training programme for Violin, Viola, Cello, and Piano Performance MA graduates, or holders of performance degrees of equivalent academic level, in the same fields.

The aim of the programme is to train chamber musicians who – on the basis of their existing MA-level musical mastery and skills, and by means of having thoroughly studied various aspects of the chamber music repertoire and performance, having developed a sensitivity and ability to cooperate with their ensemble partners and engage in meaningful musical dialogues with them, as well as having acquired experience in arts management with regard to chamber music performance in the course of their studies – can participate in Hungarian and international music life as highly trained artists specialized in chamber music performance.

 

The application is open only to already existing chamber ensembles, or ensembles formed specially for the programme. The following formations are accepted:

  • Violin, Cello, Piano Trio
  • Violin, Viola, Cello Trio
  • String Quartet

  • Piano Four Hands

 

The ensemble members’ applications must be submitted jointly.

 

Length of programme: 2 semesters

Tuition fee for the programme: 350.000 HUF / person / semester

Language of the programme: Hungarian and English

 

Curriculum

Chamber Music as Main Subject

The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with a wide selection of chamber music literature, help them build a diverse repertoire, rehearse and practice a selection of pieces, and master the high-quality performance of the works. The focus will be placed on various methods of ensemble performance and the development of the ability to actively listen to each other during performance.

Creative Chamber Music

The course is designed to develop students’ chamber music performance skills, which at the same time enhances their abilities to think in unison, as well as pay attention to, listen to, and react to each other. The course also aims to develop students’ chamber music sensitivity and skills regardless of their instrument.

Chamber Music Sight Reading

The aim of the course is to develop students’ sight reading skills and to make them acquire an advanced score reading competence necessary for confidently engaging with the chamber music literature.

Ornamentation and Improvisation

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with ornamentation in the chamber music repertoire on the basis of 17th- and 18th-century literature on the topic.

Analysis

The aim of the course is to analyze in detail the pieces covered in “Chamber Music as Main Subject” in terms of form, harmony, the different parts, and the complete work, from the point of view of the performing artist, in order to develop students’ original thinking and sensitivity.

Notational Interpretation

The aim of the course is to explore notational interpretation from early music on to the latest notational problems of the 21st century, to present in detail the various notational practices of a range of composers, and to study the appropriate interpretation of musical symbols and sign systems.

Contemporary Chamber Music

The aim of the course is to become familiar, practice, and perform contemporary pieces specifically composed for this course by students of the university majoring in composition, which also includes consultations with the composers, and to study a selection of other contemporary compositions.

Career Building Skills

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with arts management, pricing, negotiation skills, strategies of selling artistic products, making contracts, invoicing, and viable business forms for chamber music artists.

Master Class

Lectures given by world-renowned Hungarian and international chamber musicians and musicologists on a variety of composers, styles, and/or genres.

 

Application and Entrance examination

Programme for the Entrance examination

Two chamber works of two different styles, written for the formation of the applying ensemble. If the formation’s repertoire includes pieces by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Scubert, one of the works must be a piece by these composers.

  • Material of the entrance examination (audition programme)

  • Legal copies of highest school certificates – if the diploma is not in Hungarian, an official Hungarian translation is to be attached (more information here)

  • Copy of the bank transfer form of the non-refundable application fee of 4000 HUF/person (please note that this is different from the non-degree chamber music application fee).
