Lukács Pál National Viola Competition 2025
The Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music is once again announcing the Lukács Pál National Viola Competition, which has been held for several decades. By organising this event, the Strings Department of the institution pays tribute to its former teacher, thus cherishing his legacy.
Eligibility:
- Hungarian or international students of a Hungarian higher education institution on BA 3, MA 1, MA 2 levels of viola, or doctoral students specializing in viola
- Hungarian or international graduates of BA or MA in music who received their diplomas from a higher education institution in Hungary.
- Persons of the Hungarian diaspora who are students of a Hungarian or an International institution of higher education on BA 3, MA1, MA2 levels of viola or doctoral students specializing in viola.
- Persons of the Hungarian diaspora who received their BA or MA diplomas from a higher education instituion in Hungary or abroad.
- With the support of a professor in the relevant field students of BA 1 and 2 may also apply.
Age limit:
Only people born after 1 January 1994 may participate in the competition.

27 April 2025: Round II, results announcement and prize-giving
Program of the competition:
1st round:
- Lukács: Etude No. 8
- Bach: Adagio and Fugue in G minor or Grave and Fugue in A minor or Chaconne in D minor or Chromatic Fantasia
- Péter Tornyai: Voilà for Viola (2024 revised version) following movements:
a) No. 1, 3-4-5
or
b) No. 2-3, 6-7
(the score can be downloaded from HERE)
2nd round (you can choose between option A or B):
A)
One selected movement from the pieces below:
- Brahms: Sonata in F minor or Sonata in E-flat major – 1st or last movement
- Schubert: Arpeggione Sonata – 1st or last movement
- Shostakovich: Sonata – 2nd movement
- Hindemith: Sonata – 2nd movement
AND
One entire classical Stamitz- or Hoffmeister-concerto (with freely chosen cadenza), or the first movement of Hubay’s Viola Concerto (Konzertstück)
B)
two adjacent movements from the following concertos:
Bartók, Walton, Hindemith, Gyula Dávid, Iván Erőd, Miklós Rózsa viola concertos
prizes:
- Prize money
- Special prizes from Editio Musica and Hungaroton
- Concert invitations: Bartók Radio, Bartók Memorial House – debut concert
The jury has the right to divide certain prizes or not award a certain prize at all.

- László Bársony (jury chairman) Liszt and Weiner Prize-winning violist, retired associate professor of the Liszt Academy
- Eszter Fodor, violist, winner of the 2022 Lukács Pál Viola Competition
- János Fejérvári, violist, principal violist of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra
- János Láposi, violist, lecturer at the Liszt Academy, former principal violist of the Budapest String Orchestra
- Vilmos Szabadi, Liszt and Bartók–Pásztory Prize-winning violinist, associate professor at the Liszt Academy
- Péter Tornyai, Junior Prima and Artisjus Prize-winning composer, violinist, senior lecturer at the Liszt Academy
- Mihály Várnagy, violist, former principal violist of the Franz Liszt Chamber Orchestra
Application:
There is no application fee for the competition.
Application deadline: 1 March 2025
Please apply for the competition by filling in the application form under the announcement. You can find the application information HERE (in Hungarian).
In case of an active student status in an institution other than the Liszt Academy, please attach an enrolment certificate to the application. For graduates, please attach a copy of your diploma.
MORE INFORMATION:
A piano accompanist can be provided on request at a fee of 15.000 HUF for the whole competition.
Accommodation is provided by the contestant.
