Visa & Residence Permit / Registration for EU & EEA

International students who enter Hungary for study purposes have a legal obligation to officially register with Hungarian authorities.

  • If you are a third-country national, you need to apply for a Residence Permit.
  • If you are an EU/EEA citizen, you need to apply for a Registration Certificate.

In Hungary, the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing is the name of the Immigration Office (hereafter referred to as Immigration Office). Below you’ll find a brief summary of the information available from their official website (Last accessed on 19.09.2022.).

However, please note that this page is not an official source of information, make sure that you always consult the Immigration Office’s official website, contact the Embassy or Consulate of Hungary in your home country and check with the Immigration Office in case of uncertainty.

Each student must fulfill their obligations as required by Hungarian law. The Academy cannot be considered responsible for any problems resulting from the neglect of relevant rules by a student.

I. RESIDENCE PERMIT (for THIRD-COUNTRY NATIONALS, I.E. NON-EU/EEA CITIZENS)

As a third-country national (i.e. Non-EU/EEA citizen), you need to apply for a Residence Permit for the Purpose of Study.

Depending on whether you come from a visa required or a visa-free country, the application process can differ. For official information about visa requirements and procedures, please visit the government website of Consular Services:
VISA procedures and Embassies, Consulates of Hungary outside Hungary

1. Third-country national: VISA REQUIRED FOR ENTRY TO HUNGARY

If you need a visa to enter Hungary, you need to submit a joint application for D-visa and Residence Permit for the Purpose of Study. This can be done at the Hungarian Embassy or at a Hungarian Consulate in your home country. To find out about any local requirements and for the purpose of appointment booking, please get in touch with them directly as the application must be submitted in person.

For further details about the application and required documents, please visit the Immigration Office’s website on Residence Permit for the Purpose of Study: http://www.bmbah.hu/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=70&Itemid=824&lang=en

  • letter of acceptance
  • visa request letter
  • proof of payment of the tuition fee
  • letter of award (only for scholarship holders i.e. Stipendium Hungaricum, Erasmus, etc.)

Appointment booking for collection is available via the Immigration Office’s website.

If you come from a visa-free country, there are several methods to apply for a Residence Permit.

  1. At the Embassy or Consulate of Hungary in your home country
In this case, you need to follow the above steps for submission, except that you will not be applying for a visa. As the local application process can be lengthy, this method is recommended.
