Top Liszt of Hungary: Chicago-Budapest

The primary objective of the project was to present American and Hungarian contemporary musical trends in Budapest and Chicago.

The compositions of young Hungarian composers were performed by either the composers themselves or by young Hungarian performers in Chicago on multiple concert stages. In addition, the composition departments of Northwestern University, Columbia College and the University of Chicago organised multiple lectures for the participants. The contemporary musical scene of the city of Chicago was introduced to the audience in Budapest by the emblematic composer and professor of the University of Chicago, Marta Ptaszynska. A few weeks later, the young professors of the Northwestern University Composition Department arrived in Budapest to lead workshops and a composers’ introductory forum. The most talented students of the Academy interpreted the contemporary pieces during both evenings.

Our mission with the two events was to lay the foundations of a musical cooperation representing the domestic higher music education and contemporary musical heritage in one of the most important influential regions in the United States.
