András Párniczky Master Class at the Jazz Department
The album release concert of the Párniczky Quartet can be heard on December 14 at 8 p.m. at the Fonó Budai Zeneház, followed by a master class on December 19 for students and teachers of Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and Bartók Konzi.
TOPIC OF THE COURSE:
The continuation of Béla Bartók’s music in jazz.
In the first half of his presentation, the author briefly summarizes the results of his research, which is based on his dissertation defended in 2022, with Summa Cum Laude at the Doctoral School of Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. In the second half of the lecture, through musical examples, one can get to know the new paths opened up by the Bartók influence in the field of jazz improvisation.

The master class is open to all students of the Liszt Academy and the Bartók Conservatoire, students of the Liszt Academy can receive credits for participation. Pre-registration is required with Andrea Borzi at borzi.andrea[at]zeneakademia.hu.
Since 1990, András Párniczky has performed at numerous festivals and prestigious jazz clubs in almost all European countries, as well as overseas in New York and Washington, while also role an important player in Hungarian jazz scene. He founded Nigun in 2001, with which he released five albums and appeared in two more. In 2016, he created the Párniczky Quartet with the aim to perform his adaptations of the works of Béla Bartók. Their first album, published by BMC, earned critical acclaim both in Hungary and internationally. The quartet is still active in concerts and is preparing for the release of its second album in December. Instead of the usual thematic pieces, the compositions move within a much freer framework, in which, while the band’s recognizable sound has remained, a self-identified sound free of jazz clichés has been created. The bandleader has performed and collaborated with musicians such as John Zorn, Chris Potter, Daniel Erdmann, Mihály Dresch, Kristóf Bacsó, Steven Bernstein, Frank London (Klezmatics), Don Byron, Matt Darriau, Dániel Szabó, Ádám Fellegi, Frank Möbus, Miklós Lukács, Carol Cass, Palya Bea, Carlos Bica, Arthur Kell, DejanTerzic, Aaron Alexander, Frits Landesbergen, Klemens Marktl, Graham Collier, Etienne Rolin, György Kurtág Jr. and Gryllus Samu. He is a member of the Hungarian Soundpainting Orchestra, contemporary improvisational group. He worked as a musician in Andor Lukáts’s Portugál and Ildikó Szabó’s feature film Chacho Rom. He was a music director in Gaál Mariann's dance films Door Quatrologie and Barbakán. As a composer he worked with Pécsi Ballet Company and at the Győr Dance and Fine Arts School.
