Karen Ritscher Viola and 5Rhythms Moving Master Class at the Liszt Academy

13 February 2024

A professor from the Manhattan School of Music, New York University and the Chautauqua Institution will be hosted by the String Department on 19 and 20 February in Room X.

Karen Ritscher is recognized internationally as a leading pedagogue, solo and chamber musician, and new music collaborator. Her students play in many of the major orchestras of the United States, Europe and Korea. Se has been involved, among others, with Kim Kashkashian in the writing of a book about her former mentor Karen Tuttle. Karen has been in love with the 5Rhythms® movement practice for over twenty years and has been teaching it since 2011. She often combines 5Rhythms with music, designed especially for performing musicians, and gives a taste of this in Budapest. Practicing 5Rhythms, often described as a conscious dance meditation practice, catalyzes deeply personal explorations, moving us beyond what we already know into new realms of possibility of creativity and connection, where nothing is chronicled, tabulated or pinned down. Anyone of any physical ability can participate and there are no steps or choreography to follow, no technique to learn, other than listening to the guidance of our bodies. 5Rhyhms, both a practice and a philosophy, was developed by Gabrielle Roth, born from her observation and mapping of how energy moves around us and through us: in life cycles, nature, seasons and our relationships with others and ourselves.
