Piano Class for non-Piano majors- Examination requirements

Please consult the curriculum to determine whether you have to take an examination from this class, or that you have piano as one of the compulsory classes you have to complete during your studies.

 

BA Programmes:

a) For strings, winds, accordion, cimbalom, precussion, guitar and harp programmes

  • Bach: one two-part invention, or one piece from the 18 small preludes series, or any piece of similar difficulty from a different baroque composer
  • One movement from the smaller sonatas of either Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, or an easier sonatina
  • Three performance pieces of different styles:
  • One Bartók piece, at the minimum difficulty level of "Microcosmos IV"
    • One romantic piece
    • One piece chosen by the student

From all of these pieces, at least two have to be performed as a correpetitor with a partner.

Playing without sheet music is not a requirement.

b) For harpsicord, organ, choir conducting, orchestral conducting and composition programmes

Bach: any prelude or fugue from Wohltemperiertes Klavier series I-II., or three movements from a cyclical piece, or one other independent piece (for example: Chromatic Fantasia and Fugue), or one movement from a concerto, or one piece of similar difficulty from a different baroque composer

  • An entire sonata, or at least one slow and one fast movement from the sonata from either Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert
  • Thee pieces of different styles (except from the same eras as the pieces mentioned above)
    • One has to be a virtuoso-like piece
    • One has to be from Bartók or his contemporaries

From these, at least one, or at the most two of the pieces have to performed as a chamber music performance and as a correpetitor with a partner.

Playing without sheet music is not a requirement.

c) For singers

The requirements are the same as the for the instrumentalists.

During grading, the differences in expertise will be considered.

Eligible pieces to choose from:

  • Bach: 18 little preludes or two-part invention, or a piece of similar difficulty from a different baroque composer
  • Easy sonatinas and sonatas
  • Romantic pieces, fore example: Schumann:Jugendalbum, Mendelssohn: Lieder ohne Worte, Chopin: Waltzes, Preludes
  • One piece from Bartók, or a piece from a different XX. or XXI. century composer at minimum the difficulty level of Bartók's "Microcosmos IV"

From these pieces one can be a chamber music performance.

Playing without sheet music is not a requirement.

MA Programmes:

The MA and BA examination requirements are the same, however, the full sonatas have to be played instead of pieces (from Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert).

For Choral Conducting, Orchestral Conducting and Composition programmes even the I. semester class requires an exam to complete.

The I. semester exam requirement: A 20 minute long programme of the student's choice

  • It must contain at least three styles
  • From all the pieces, one can be a chamber music piece
