Classical Double Bass Bachelor Training Course Description

The aim of the training is to educate excellent artists with high level technical and artistic skills, who are ready to integrate into various musical ensembles and orchestras. Therefore, beside etudes, sonatas, concertos and solo pieces, orchestral parts take especially important role in the curruculum.

 

Suggested repertoire for semesters 1–2:

  • Etudes: Simandl double bass school, Montag double bass school IV. book, Storch I-II., Hrabe I-II., Libon, Kreutzer etudes.
  • Orchestral parts – Sonatas: Fesch, Marcello, Vivaldi
  • Concerti: Capuzzi, Cimador, Pichl, Hoffmeister, Vivaldi
  • Virtuoso pieces, Bach Cello Suites transcripts, Lorenzetti, Dragonetti, Montag L. pieces.

  • Etudes: Gregora, Montanari, Simandl: Gradus … I. book, Montag double bass school V. book
  • Orchestral excerpts
  • Sonatas: Eccles, Händel, Montag V. Concerti: Dragonetti, Stein, Geissl
  • Virtuoso pieces: Bach Cello suites, Koussewitzky: Chanson Triste, Valse Miniature, Humoresque; Bottesini: Elégia.

  • Etudes: Czerny, Montag double bass school V. book, H.Fryba: Concert-Etude, Simandl: Gradus…II. Book
  • Orchestral excerpts
  • Sonatas: Gallai Attila: Solo Sonata, Misek I., Hindemith, Bach: D-major and G-major gamba sonata
  • Concerti: Vanhal, Dittersdorf, Simandl Op. 75.
  • Virtuoso showpieces: Bach Cello Suites, Bottesini Virtuoso Pieces

 

Examination materials:

1-5. semesters: scales, two etudes

5 orchestral excerpts, one short virtuoso piece, one entire sonata, one entire concerto. The concerto and virtuoso piece must both be performed from memory.

At the end of the 6. semester the candidate will perform a diploma concert based on the following criteria: one short virtuoso piece, one sonata, one concerto, one chamber piece

 

Further Requirements:

Knowledge of repertoire. Upon completion of studies of double bass, most candidates will continue their careers as orchestral players. It is imperative for candidates to become familiar and proficient in orchestral repertoire that will appear later as audition material.

Through orchestral work, the candidate will experience various styles of music, and will learn to distinguish between the contrasting periods, genres, and techniques.

Authentic interpretation, orchestral metre and phrasing, adjustment, orchestral agogics and the development of musical taste are all important parts of the tuition.

Orchestral Performances: Each candidate will be required to perform in at least one orchestra concert per semester.
