Ádám Medveczky to conduct the 2022 New Year's Concert in the Grand Hall
The January 1 concert organised by the Liszt Academy, the Hungarian public service broadcasting organisation MTVA and the Hungarian Radio Music Ensembles, an event that has by now become a tradition, will be conducted in 2022 by Ádám Medveczky, Kossuth Prize-winning artist and lecturer at the Liszt Academy.
Over the past two years, music lovers have grown accustomed to starting the New Year on the evening of 1 January with a concert organised jointly by the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Liszt Academy; the concert is broadcast on public television and radio. The audience was treated to popular compositions on both occasions, with the events featuring the most outstanding conductors in Hungary: the first time around Tamás Vásáry was the conductor, this year János Kovács led the orchestra and the young talents of the Liszt Academy. The MTVA announced in a statement that next year Kossuth Prize-winning conductor Ádám Medveczky, who is also a lecturer at the Liszt Academy, will conduct the concert.
“The excellent collaboration between the Liszt Academy, the public service media and the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra has matured into a tradition as music lovers had the opportunity to enjoy scores of unforgettable experiences at the concerts of the orchestra at the Liszt Academy in recent years”, highlighted Dr. Andrea Vigh, rector at the Liszt Academy, following the announcement. “The performance of young talents showcases the combined power of tradition and an innovative approach, their concerts – featuring vastly experienced artists - radiate openness, a fresh, dynamic and unique atmosphere to kick off the New Year. The events create a heart-warming harmony that elevates the New Year's Concerts housed in the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy into the ranks of the legendary concerts of the genre”, she added.

"I consider it important that the New Year's Concerts at the Liszt Academy become a true celebration and a cherished tradition, as we feel that music-loving people are looking forward to these events”, said Márton Devich, director of the Hungarian Radio Music Ensembles and channel director at Bartók Radio. He added: “The first two concerts were a great success, the audience was very grateful for them, continuing these events was never a question. We are happy that Ádám Medveczky will be conducting our orchestra on the first day of 2022. It is a great honour to work with him; he is highly regarded as a professional authority and an example to follow for generations of Hungarian musicians. Finally yet importantly, he is authentic as a person. He will celebrate his 80th birthday in 2021; I hope that working together will be a memorable gift for him – I am convinced it will be a special experience for our orchestra.”
“My relationship with the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra dates back quite a while to the time when I was playing auxiliary percussion in this great ensemble. The recording of my first album also ties me to the Radio Orchestra, and they were there with me at MTV’s 1st International Competition for Conductors. Their encouragement and love contributed greatly to me winning the silver medal. Then in 1980, we grew even closer together on a longer tour of the US. Besides the many occasions when we worked together, the truly lasting value is that I have encountered many great colleagues and friends among previous and current members of the orchestra. It is an honour for me to be the conductor of the concert that will launch 2022; I look forward to it”, said Ádám Medveczky, according to the statement.
Similarly to previous years, the New Year’s Concert is scheduled to be broadcast by Bartók Radio and the M5 culture channel.
