Cello master class by Matias de Oliveira Pinto

Matias de Oliveira Pinto was born in São Paulo, Brazil, into an artist family. He began taking piano classes and learned to play the cello very early on, and, turning eighteen, he became the student of Zygmunt Kubala, music professor of the University of Music in Curitiba, Brazil, and the same year he took part in the masterclass of Aldo Parisot. Soon his success in a music competition awarded him a scholarship at the Herbert-von-Karajan Foundation. He polished his talent further under the supervision Eberhard Finke, principal cellist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and later with the guidance of Professor Csaba Onczay during a two-year training at the Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest; but his training also included masterclasses with Antonio Meneses, Gerhard Mantel, William Pleeth and Paul Tortelier.

 

Beside his solo, chamber and festival performances worldwide – in South America, Europe, the USA, Japan, Australia and New Zealand – Matias de Oliveira Pinto is also a dedicated professor. He has been teaching at the Hanns Eisler Music University in Berlin since 1991 and in Muenster since 2005, but, being an internationally renowned and highly popular cello teacher, he has held several cello and chamber music masterclasses in Germany, France, Brazil, the USA and Japan.

His artistic merit and achievements are acknowledged by the wider professional circles and by recordings under various labels, too: the Berlin-based publishing companies "Edition Margaux" and “New Music” appointed him the editor of contemporary cello literature, and several composers have dedicated their works to him, highly praising his radio and CD productions.
