Gergely Fazekas’ online lecture on György Kurtág’s opera
At 6 pm (CET) on 10 June 2020, Gergely Fazekas senior lecturer of the Liszt Academy is giving an online lecture on György Kurtág’s opera in English on the online platform of the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in Berlin upon the invitation of Kirill Gerstein.
Russian-American pianist Kirill Gerstein, winner of the 2001 Rubinstein Competition and of the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award has been on the academic staff of the Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik in Berlin since 2018. During the period of the pandemic crisis, a new initiative titled “#eislerlab” was launched and as part of it an online series „Kirill Gerstein invites”, which involves a lecture starting at 6 pm (CET) every Wednesday, followed by a discussion hosted by Kirill Gerstein. Some of the invitees so far have been the legendary harpsichordist and fortepianist Andreas Staier, one of the most creative jazz pianists of our time, Brad Mehldau, Paul Boghossian professor of philosophy at New York University and Anthony Fogg, the artistic administrator of the Boston Symphony and of Tanglewood Music Festival.
From 6 pm on 10 June, Gergely Fazekas is going to give a one-hour lecture with the title „Kurtág translating Beckett”. It focusses on György Kurtág’s opera Fin de partie based on Samuel Beckett’s drama, first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 2018.
Attendance at the lecture is free of charge but registration is required (registration is possible here).
Gergely Fazekas’ review of the premier of the opera was awarded with the Prize for Quality Journalism and was elected to be the best Hungarian article of December 2018 by the Forum of Editors-in-Chief.
Kirill Gerstein would have taken to the stage of the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy on 2 June 2020 as the chamber music partner of the Hagen Quartet. The cancelled concert has been rescheduled for season 2020–2021.
