Liszt Academy announces the Lukács Pál National Viola Competition again
The 2025 round of the contest with decades-long history will take place in April, with musicians born on or after 1 January 1994 competing for cash prizes and concert invitations.
The Strings Department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music is organising the competition in honour of its former teacher, head of department and Vice-President, violist Pál Lukács (1919–1981), thus cherishing his legacy.
The competition, which will be held from 26 to 27 April 2025, is open to Hungarian and foreign students – active or graduated – of Hungarian higher music education institutions in Hungary, as well as Hungarian students studying abroad, until 1 March 2025.
The detailed announcement, including the conditions, the repertoire and the online application form can be found here.
Pál Lukács studied violin at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music from 1934 to 1943 with János Koncz and Imre Waldbauer, and singing with Margit Walter and Imre Molnár. From 1946 he was a teacher at the Liszt Academy, initially teaching singing, then from 1947 he became head of the Viola Department, from 1972 Vice-President, and from 1975 head of the Singing Department. From 1936 he played in the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, where he was principal violist from 1947 to 1976.
