Born in Lyon in 1959, Roger Muraro first studied the saxophone, before teaching himself the piano. At the age of 19 he was admitted to the Paris Conservatoire, where he studied with Yvonne Loriod. Here he also met his professor's husband, Olivier Messiaen, and soon became an expert interpreter of the French composer's works. He recorded Messaen's complete solo piano oeuvre: the seven-disk collection was released in 2001.

Muraro's career as a pianist is marked by victories at major competitions of the instrument, including Moscow's Tchaikovsky and Parma's Liszt Competitions. The pillars of his broad repertoire include the works of Mussorgsky, Ravel, Albeniz, Rachmaninoff and Debussy, as well as of Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt and Schumann. As a soloist, he has cooperated with conductors like Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, Pinchas Steinberg, Marek Janowski, Valery Gergiev and Kent Nagano.
